"The Crowd" watercolour on paper, exhibition of selected painting
Tokyo, from Europe, 2020.
2020, Japan seen from far, from Europe.
Here - in Hamburg - Mayumi has her point of observation even if her heart travels where it wants, running towards the Orient: the glimpse prenetrates feelings and places; the dark colours speak of sadness and nostalgia; sfumato quickly applied tells of anxiety and worry.
A painting divided in two, meaning a “before and after”: the world divided in two different times marked by a virus infinitessimal but very powerful that paralyzed everything, changing the life of everyone.
Tokyo before lockdown – immersed in the city’s frantic chaos making alive and true; and Tokyo after lockdown - slowed down, silent, almost unreal.
Some persons, here and there in the painting, suggests the hope of a life that starts again, gradually, as before. Tokyo postponing 2020 Olympic games in a uncertain future that we don’t know yet.
An intense watercolour evoking traditional Japanese scroll format hanging - almost messaging - a good omen.
